🏠 What is a Census?
A census is the process of counting all the people living in a country. It helps the government know:
- How many people live in each area
- How many schools, hospitals, or roads are needed
- What facilities people need based on their age, education, jobs, and houses
In 2023, for the first time in Pakistan’s history, a Digital Census was conducted using tablets and mobile apps — a big step toward smart planning.
📱 What is the Digital Census 2023?
The Digital Census 2023 used:
- Android tablets
- GPS location
- Digital forms
- Online portals
It replaced the old paper-based system and became faster, transparent, and accurate.
The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) led this project with the help of NADRA, NTC, and other departments.
💡 Main Benefits of the Digital Census
1. Accurate Data Collection
Errors in handwriting or manual entry were removed. The GPS-tagged entries ensured each house and person was counted correctly.
2. Real-Time Monitoring
Supervisors and officials could see updates live and manage problems instantly through dashboards.
3. Time-Saving & Cost-Efficient
Data entered digitally saved time and reduced the cost of printing, transportation, and double-checking.
4. Less Chance of Manipulation
Every record was saved with a time stamp, location, and identity — making the process more transparent.
📊 How Digital Census Helps in National Planning
The data collected in 2023 will help Pakistan in:
- Health Sector
Planning new hospitals and assigning doctors where needed. - Education Sector
Building new schools and hiring teachers where student numbers are high. - Transport & Roads
Constructing roads and transport systems based on population clusters. - Disaster Management
In case of floods or earthquakes, rescue teams will know the exact number of people in affected areas. - Resource Allocation
Provinces and districts will get funds based on their true population.
🧑💻 Role of IT Workers & Enumerators
More than 100,000 field workers were trained to use tablets and mobile apps. IT experts gave support in:
- Device configuration
- Troubleshooting in the field
- Server handling
- Data monitoring
Youths with DIT, Computer diplomas, or typing experience got jobs as IT Assistants, Trainers, Supervisors, and Enumerators.
